About our choir
 Formed
in 1994 as the University of Lethbridge Conservatory of Music Junior
Choral Ensemble, this choral organization has shortened its same and
expanded in numbers considerably. It has been under the direction of
Kathy Matkin-Clapton since 1996. Since that time, the group has:
- divided into two choirs
- been recognized provincially and locally for its outstanding choral sound
- recorded 3 cds
- performed on national television
- performed for thousands of appreciative listeners
Auditions are not required. Just dedication to the group and a willingness to work hard
and have fun. The goal of the organization is to promote joy through
singing, musical growth, artistic appreciation and skilled choral
singing.
In the bigger picture, these choirs exist to give children in our community:
- a place to sing
- a place to feel part of a group working toward a common goal
- a chance to feel proud of making great music
- a belief that their contribution and artistry is uniquely valued
 Is
that there is great joy in singing with other and to appreciate the
great pay-off that comes with hard work (aka lots of clapping).
We also focus on:
- learning healthy vocal technique and singing habits
- growing young musicians
- excellent choral literature
- connecting with others who love to sing
- expanding knowledge of the world through song
 Possibly
best known for her zany approach to all that she does,
Kathy
Matkin-Clapton is also well-known in the community for her dedication
to creating meaningful musical opportunities for young performers. To
all of these choirs she brings many years experience as a music
specialist, private voice teacher, university instructor, clinician and
performer.
Her love for music and for young people is brought together in her
role as choral director. She has taught literally thousands of
children, many of whom had their musical beginnings under her
direction. While Kathy is always proud of the recognition her choirs
receive, her bigger dream is to make music a lasting part of children’s
lives, wherever they happen to be.
